In anticipation of the upcoming holiday season, we thought it would be interesting to check out the market for turkeys. A few excerpts taken from the US Census Bureau, in 2005 dollars:

* $3.2 billion - value of all turkeys produced in the US in 2005
* $5.7 million - value of US imports of live turkeys in the first half of 2006 (96% of which were from Canada)
* $900,000 - value of US trade deficit in live turkeys in the first half of 2006

In comparison, in the number of federal dollars spent in 2005:

$3.846 billion - US Postal Service
$3.405 billion - Army Reserve pay
$3.134 billion - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
$3.000 billion - Millenium Challenge Corporation
$2.568 billion - DD(X) Navy Destroyer
$2.308 billion - Annual Budget, Department of Justice

Naturally, the next step is to find the value of all turducken produced in the US. Or even “bustergophechideckneaealckideverwingailusharkolanine” (I’m not making that up).
